What is the difference between DVD-R and DVD+R?

There is two competing technologies that use different formats, hence the name -R and +R. DVD-R only allows for one layer of data to be written where DVD+R is a dvd disc that allows multiple layers for one disc.

DVD-R is an older technology but tends to be more compatible with video playback  on DVD home players. DVD+R can play at higher speeds and can contain more information with their Double Layer discs having a storage capability of 8.5 GB
